November 2016 Exhibition- Darker Days Come to Oadby

By 19th November 2016 January 21st, 2017 Exhibitions

On 19 November our ninth exhibition was launched in St Peter’s Parish church with two public lectures. We welcomed back Lt Col Jeremy Prescott who gave us a fascinating talk ‘The Miracle Flower- From Flanders to the Tower’ tracing the history of the poppy as our symbol of remembrance. Our second talk by Nigel Atter focussed on the latter stages of the Battle of the Somme and the stories of the Oadby servicemen who died between September and November 1916. In addition to information about the casualties we also looked at how conscription affected the villagers and what was happening in the ‘blacked-out’ winter of 1916.
